Bodyboard – SUMA Figueira Euro
JOANA RUNNER-UP
Joana Schenker (‘Associação de Bodyboard de Sagres’ – ABS) finished today runner-up in the SUMA Figueira Bodyboard Euro 2013 powered by Açoreana Seguros. The athlete from the Algarve won all the heats until the final of the Event 3 of the European Circuit ETB – Women and was only surpassed in the final by the Portuguese national champion Catarina Sousa, who won the event and was crowned European Champion 2013.
Coming from an exciting 9th place in IBA Sintra Portugal Pro (Portuguese leg of world tour), a 7th place in the Miss Sumol Cup (Event 2 ETB – Women, held in Ílhavo, Aveiro) and a win in the Portuguese National Bodyboard Circuit (Event 2, Cortegaça), Joana Schenker performed very strong this Event 3 ETB – Women, held in Cova Gala Beach, Figueira da Foz. The women’s competition started directly in the quarter-finals and the ‘rider’ from the Algarve clearly won her opening battery yesterday, resisting the threat of Spanish Olga Cutilas.
Today, in the first semi-final women, Joana won again highlighted. As she had done twice in the IBA Sintra Portugal Pro, the athlete from the Algarve again imposed herself over Fatima Zahara (finalist Miss Sumol Cup), leaving the Moroccan champion in the second position of the heat, and maintained superiority over the Spanish Olga Cutilas, 4th in this semi-final.
In the final, the Portuguese-German Joana Schenker returned to leave Moroccan far behind and was very close (1,40 points) to the first place, but the victory was achieved by the Portuguese national champion Catarina Sousa. The veteran (36 years) bodyboarder from Lisbon area was crowned European Champion with wins in two consecutive events (SUMA Figueira EURO and Miss Sumol Cup) and a second place in Event 1 (La Salie, France).
JOÃO PINHEIRO FINISHED 7TH
João Pinheiro (‘Associação de Bodyboard de Sagres’ – ABS) reached the semi-finals of the SUMA Figueira Euro Bodyboard 2013 powered by Açoreana Seguros and finished the event in 7th position of the overall men standings.
This event in Figueira da Foz was Event 2 of the European Circuit ETB – Men. The men’s tour still has two more events: Zumaia Bodyboard Pro 2013 TBC (Basque Country, from 18th October) and Morocco Bodyboard Pro 2013 (Morocco, from 29th November). The women’s tour will still has only one event: Morocco Bodyboard Pro 2013.
João Pinheiro entered the competition only in the 2nd round, today, and was second in the heat, surpassed only by Spanish Kevin Orihuela, who hours later would win this championship. In the quarter-final, the ‘rider’ from the Algarve again qualified in second behind former World Champion Pierre Louis Costes (France).
In his semi-final today, João Pinheiro returned to find Orihuela, Costes and also the Portuguese national champion Manuel Centeno. “I ended up losing in the semi-final, in a difficult heat where the waves did not cooperate for me, always being a little lost,” said the ABS athlete. João Pinheiro was eliminated (4th in the semi-final), but won important points to revive his European campaign after 17th place finish in Event 1 ETB (La Salie, France).
The ‘Associação de Bodyboard de Sagres’ – ABS competed in this championship with another athlete: Francisco Pinheiro. The charismatic ‘rider’ from the Algarve started in the best way, winning its debut heat in the 1st round yesterday, but today was eliminated in the second round. It is noteworthy that Francisco Pinheiro won in the first round over compatriot Dino Carmo (2nd in the heat), which would be the only Portuguese in the men’s final.
