Former juniors from the Algarve Francisco Duarte and Jakob Lilienweiss will make their debut on the World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) at the Pro Zarautz event, in the Basque Country. The QS 1000 event began today, Thursday March 31 and runs until Sunday. The first day was canceled. The third musketeer from the Algarve, Frederico ‘Martim’ Magalhães is also at the Basque event, but for him it is already the second QS of his career. The Algarve will be represented by another two surfers, veterans Marlon Lipke and Eduardo Fernandes, from the ‘Algarve Surf Clube’.
The Algarve Surf Musketeers are the three former junior who stood out in their last ‘Esperanças’ (Youth) season last year. With the entry into force of the new WSL rule that reduces the junior age from 20 to 18, Francisco, Jakob and ‘Martim’ can no longer continue to compete in the Pro Junior and are this year making their debut in the QS.
Frederico ‘Martim’ Magalhães debuted on QS earlier, in January, at the Seat Pro Netanya presented by Billabong, in Israel. He finished 33rd. ‘Martim’ representes the ‘Clube Naval de Portimão’ (a club in Algarve) but is training with José Maria Pyrrait at Ericeira, near Lisbon. He was the regional Open runner-up 2015 and the 5th best U-18 National last season.

The surfer from Lagos, athlete of the ‘Algarve Surf Clube’, is still gaining match fitness after injury in a shoulder and comes from a 5th place in the opening event of the Portuguese Pro Tour Liga Moche 2016, two weeks ago. Marlon was 6th in the final ‘ranking’ Liga Moche 2015.

In addition to the 16 Portuguese surfers, other three ‘almost Portuguese’ athletes ar in Zarautz: Spanish Gony Zubizarreta (winner of Event 1 Liga Moche 2016, Top World 100 surfer, living in Ericeira) and British surfers Arran Strong and Keshia Eyre.
Day 1 of the Pro Zarautz, today Thursday, March 31, was called OFF. The new ‘call’ is scheduled for tomorrow at 7:15 a.m. (Portuguese time) and is only for men.
