Beatriz Gago, young sailor from the Algarve, has won the EDP XI -Portugal Youth Championship in the Girls group for the second consecutive year. Representing the Clube Naval de Portimão, Gago finished the championship 5th place overall (1st Girls), at Cascais, yesterday, 26th March. Her teammate Beatriz Cintra finished runner-up Girls (11th overall) and William Risselin, also from the Algarve, representing the Ginásio Clube Naval de Faro, took the 3rd place on the Boys podium. The new Portugal Boys Youth hampion is Manuel Ramos, from the Clube de Vela do Barreiro.

Beatriz Gago and Manuel Ramos repeated their past victories in the Portugal Championship of Children in 2013. Beatriz Gago has won twice the Portugal Championship of Children (2012 and 2013) and Youth (2015 and 2016). The record of the sailor from Portimão in the Optimist class is hard to match.

At this year championship, in Cascais, Beatriz Gago took over the Girls leadership in the first of four days of the event and didn’t let go until the end, always sailing amongst the leaders of the 120 Optimist fleet.

Gagos’s teammate Beatriz Cintra made a fantastic championship. She was 5th Girls on the second day, rose to 3rd on the penultimate day (friday) and clinched national runner-up on the last day, ensuring two places at the Girls national podium for the Clube Naval de Portimão.

William Risselin, from the Ginásio Clube Naval de Faro, also improved everyday and turned out to be the best from the Algarve at the Championship. Risselin was ranked 10th on the first day, rose to 9th the next day, jumped to 4th with a fantastic performance on the penultimate day of the championship and reached the 3rd place on the last day.

Guilherme Cavaco, also from the Ginásio Clube Naval de Faro, strengthened its progress in the last two days and managed to finish 7th place, afte having won two of the three races of the day in your group on the penultimate day, friday.

The Algarve had a 4th sailor in the top 10 finish of the Portugal Youth Championship 2016. Manuel Fortunato, from the Clube de Vela de Lagos, finished 10th place. It was a difficult championship to the former children’s Portuguese national champion. Manuel Fortunato suffered a disqualification on the first day, that sent him to the 34th place. He recovered in the next three days and managed to reach the Top 10 national.

The champiosnhip was disputed by the 120 best youth Portuguese sailors. The Algarve was represented at the championship by 37 sailors from 6 clubs: Clube Naval de Portimão (9), Associação Naval do Guadiana (8), Cube de Vela de Lagos (6), Clube Náutico de Tavira (6), Ginásio Clube Naval de Faro (5) and the Grupo Naval de Olhão (3).
