A equipa do Clube de Vela de Lagos formada por Tiago Serra, André Serra, Tomás Quitéria e Manuel Fortunato sagrou-se ontem campeã regional do Algarve em Team Racing Optimist. O campeonato foi organizado pelo Clube Naval de Portimão e decorreu nas águas do Rio Arade, no fim-de-semana 20 e 21 de Abril, com o patrocínio Volvo Car Portugal e os apoios da Federação Portuguesa de Vela, Associação Regional de Vela do Sul, Associação Portuguesa da Classe Internacional Optimist, Câmara Municipal de Portimão e Burguer Ranch.

A Equipa 1 CVLagos disputou a final com a equipa principal do clube espanhol Real Club Maritimo y Tenis de Punta Umbria, campeões regionais de team racing optimist na Andaluzia. Os jovens velejadores lacobrigenses, que no primeiro dia de regatas tinham tido uma prestação fraca, impuseram-se no duelo ibérico da final, sobretudo, devido à performance de Tiago Serra. O bi-campeão nacional de Juvenis assumiu o comando da equipa e conseguiu atrasar as manobras do conjunto espanhol (três raparigas e um rapaz) para dar tempo e espaço à evolução dos restantes membros da equipa portuguesa. A final foi disputada à melhor de 5 regatas e a equipa CVLagos venceu por 3-2.

Na ‘Petit Final’ – duelo entre as equipas derrotadas nas meias-finais, para apurar o 3º e o 4º classificado à melhor de 3 regatas – a Equipa 1 CNPortimão impôs-se à Equipa 1 da Associação Nacional do Guadiana. A Equipa 1 CNPortimão venceu todas as regatas do primeiro dia, mas no segundo dia de prova, domingo, a equipa anfitriã foi vítima de um erro de percurso e não conseguiu chegar à final.

O clube espanhol RCMTPU conseguiu o segundo lugar na prova, mas não conta para o campeonato regional do Algarve. Assim, a Equipa 1 CVLagos é campeã regional team racing optimist 2013 e a Equipa 1 CNPortimão é vice-campeã regional.

Os jovens velejadores algarvios têm pouca experiência em team racing, factor que valoriza ainda mais a vitória do conjunto de Lagos sobre a experiente equipa espanhola. As regatas team racing são muito diferentes das habituais regatas de frota. Nestas, a prova é individual e cada velejador tem apenas o objectivo de cortar a linha em primeiro. Nas regatas team racing é necessário muito trabalho de equipa, dificultando as manobras dos adversários e favorecendo a evolução e recuperação dos colegas de equipa.

As regatas team racing proporcionam maior espectáculo; são disputadas próximo de terra e em percursos pequenos e rápidos. Cada regata demora 7 a 8 minutos de intensa luta entre as equipas. Em Portimão foram formadas equipas de quatro velejadores e cada regata foi um duelo entre duas equipas. Inscreveram-se 13 equipas, num total de 52 velejadores de 6 clubes.




A prova em Portimão começou às 13h00 de sábado, com vento Sueste de 10 a 12 nós. “Condições óptimas para o que pretendemos”, disse ao Swell-Algarve o director técnico nacional da Federação Portuguesa de Vela. Pedro Rodrigues acrescentou que a federação está muito empenhada em promover a modalidade team racing e deixou uma palavra de elogio à Vela algarvia: “A Vela no Algarve é fenomenal. Produz campeões nacionais e tem sabido manter-se a um nível muito aceitável”.

TEAM CVLAGOS REGIONAL CHAMPION


The team from ‘Clube de Vela de Lagos’ formed by Tiago Serra, André Serra, Tomás Quitéria and Manuel Fortunato was crowned champion yesterday in the Algarve Regional Optimist Team Racing. The championship was organized by the ‘Clube Naval de Portimão’ and held in the waters of the Rio Arade, during the weekend 20th and 21st April, with Volvo Car Portugal sponsorship and support of the Portuguese Sailing Federation, Association of Regional South Sailing, Portuguese Association International Optimist Class, City of Portimão and Burger Ranch.

Team 1 CVLagos disputed the final with the core team of the Spanish club ‘Real Club Maritimo y Tenis de Punta Umbria’, regional optimist team racing champions in Andalucia. The young sailors from Lagos that on the first day of regattas had a weak performance, were stronger on the Iberian duel in the final, mainly due to the performance of Tiago Serra. The two times (2012 and 2013) national champion age group ‘Juvenis’ took command of his team and managed to delay the maneuvers of the Spanish set (three girls and one boy) to give time and space for the evolution of the remaining members of the Portuguese team. The final was played to the best of 5 regattas and CVLagos team won 3-2.

In ‘Petit Final’ – duel between teams defeated in the semi-finals to determine the 3rd and 4th ranked to the best of 3 regattas – Team 1 CNPortimão won over to the first team of the ‘Assciação Naval do Guadiana’. The Team 1 CNPortimão won all the races on the first day, but on the second day of competition, Sunday, the host team was the victim of a route error and failed to reach the final.

The Spanish club RCMTPU took second place in the event, but did not account for the regional championship of the Algarve. Thus, Team 1 CVLagos is regional optimist team racing champion 2013 and Team 1 CNPortimão is regional runner-up.

The young sailors from the Algarve have little experience in team racing, factor that values ​​Lagos victory over the experienced Spanish team. The team racing regattas are very different to the usual fleet regattas. In these, each regatta is an individual race and the sailor only aim is to finish first. Team racing regattas require much teamwork, to difficult maneuvers of opponents and encouraging the development and recovery of teammates.

The team racing regattas provide greater spectacle, are held close to ground and on short distances and fast. Each race takes 7-8 minutes of intense struggle between the two teams. In Portimão, there were teams of four sailors and each regatta was a duel between two teams. Signed up 13 teams, a total of 52 sailors from six clubs.

The race started at 13:00 in Portimao on Saturday, with Southeast wind 10 to 12 knots. “Optimum conditions for what we want,” said to Swell-Algarve the technical national director of the Portuguese Sailing Federation. Pedro Rodrigues added that the federation is very committed to promoting team racing and left a word of praise fro sailing in the Algarve: “Sailling in the Algarve is phenomenal. It produces national champions and has been able to keep a very acceptable level.”
