O algarvio Luís Esteves sagrou-se hoje vice-campeão nacional de Longboard 2013 após concluir na 3ª posição a última prova do circuito. O atleta do Clube de Surf de Faro (CSF) terminou a época a 170 pontos do título: “Ainda não foi desta… para o ano há mais”, desabafou na rede social Facebook. A 3ª (e última) Etapa do Circuito Nacional de Longboard 2013 foi disputada em São Pedro do Estoril e ganha por Bruno Grandela, que levou o título nacional para Peniche.
‘Prova rainha’ do Estoril Surf Festival 2013, a derradeira etapa do Circuito Nacional de Longboard deste ano tinha quatro candidatos ao título à partida, separados por apenas 130 pontos: Ruben Silva, Luís Esteves, Luís ‘Lufi’ Bento e Bruno Grandela. A etapa foi disputada num único dia, hoje. O pequeno swell de Oeste que entrou pela manhã foi pequeno para tanta emoção e esgotou a frequência de ondas na enchente, proporcionando menos espectáculo na final.
‘Lufi’ não conseguiu chegar a tempo da China – onde foi assistir ao Mundial de Longboard – e não competiu em São Pedro do Estoril. Ruben Silva, campeão nacional 2012 e líder do circuito no início desta última etapa (com Luís Esteves a 30 pontos de distância), foi eliminado nas meias-finais e deixou a decisão para Luís Esteves e Bruno Grandela discutirem na final.
Luís Esteves passou as suas duas primeiras baterias (oitavos-de-final e quartos-de-final) em primeiro e foi segundo na sua meia-final, apurando-se para a final, onde apenas precisava de terminar à frente de Grandela. Não conseguiu. “Podia ser melhor”, disse Luís Esteves ao Swell-Algarve, lamentando ter havido “poucas ondas na final”.
Com 26 anos de idade, o atleta algarvio promete voltar a lutar pelo título nacional no próximo ano e pede mais apoios, para desenvolver o talento que já o coloca no top nacional e lhe permitiu ter um ano de alto rendimento no Longboard: é vice-campeão nacional (com vitória na 1ª Etapa do circuito), é campeão do novo circuito nacional inter-clubes Rebel Tour (que se estreou este ano com 2 etapas), representou a selecção nacional na campanha do bronze no Eurosurf 2013, nos Açores, e lidera o Circuito de Surf do Algarve 2013 com duas etapas ainda para disputar.
O Clube de Surf de Faro esteve representado em São Pedro do Estoril também pelo presidente do clube, Manuel Mestre. “Foi miserável”, disse ‘Necas’ ao Swell-Algarve. O veterano surfista farense terminou a etapa na 9ª posição, eliminado na segunda bateria (quartos-de-final). “No primeiro heat surfei mal mas passei. No segundo surfei melhor e não passei”, explicou ‘Necas’, que na etapa anterior tinha tido, segundo reconheceu, a sua pior prestação de sempre num nacional de Longboard. Essa etapa, na Costa da Caparica, também correu mal a Luís Esteves, tendo sido a única prova nacional deste ano em que não conseguiu chegar à final, o que acabou por lhe custar o título.
Bruno Grandela, que seguia em 4º no ‘ranking’ nacional após duas etapas, venceu a 3ª Etapa em São Pedro do Estoril e conquistou o título nacional de Longboard 2013. O surfista de Peniche, várias vezes campeão nacional, junta este ano ao título nacional de Longboard ao títulos de campeão nacional de Stand Up Paddle (Race e Ocean) e de vencedor da Taça de Portugal em Longboard.
Recorde-se que este é o segundo ano consecutivo em que um atleta do Clube de Surf de Faro conquista o título de vice-campeão nacional de Longboard. Em 2012, João Veríssimo concluiu o campeonato a 30 pontos do título nacional e Luís Esteves foi 4º no ‘ranking’ final. Este ano, Veríssimo não disputou o nacional de Longboard.

LUÍS ESTEVES NATIONAL RUNNER-UP
Luís Esteves from the Algarve was crowned today the Portuguese Longboard National runner-up after completing in 3rd position the last event of the circuit. The athlete representing the ‘Clube de Surf de Faro’ ( CSF ) ended the season 170 points short of the title: “I didn’t make it… maybe next year”, he declared on the social network Facebook. The 3rd ( and final ) event of the Portuguese National Longboard Tour 2013 was held today in São Pedro do Estoril and was won by Bruno Grandela, who took the Portuguese national title to Peniche.
Main event of the Estoril Surf Festival 2013, the final leg of the Portuguese National Longboard Tour had this year four title contenders at the start, separated by only 130 points: Ruben Silva, Luis Esteves, Luís ‘Lufi’ Bento and Bruno Grandela. The event was played in a single day, today. The small west swell that came in the morning was too small for so much emotion and exhausted the frequency of waves in the rising tide, providing less stage to the final.
‘Lufi’ was not able to arrive in time from China – where he attended the World Longboard Championships – and did not compete in São Pedro do Estoril. Ruben Silva, Portuguese National Champion 2012 and leader of the circuit at the beginning of this year’s last event (with Luís Esteves 30 points away) was eliminated in the semi-finals and left the decision to be discussed in the final by Luís Esteves and Bruno Grandela.
Luis Esteves qualified in first in his first two heats (1/8 and quarter-finals) and was second in his semi-final, going to the final, where he only needed to finish ahead of Grandela. He didn’t make it. “It could be better”, said Luis Esteves to the Swell-Algarve, lamenting the absence of waves in the final.
Luís Esteves, 26, promises to fight for the national title next year and calls for more support to develop the talent that already puts him in the top and allowed him to have a good Longboard season: national runner-up (having won Event 1 of the circuit), champion of the new inter-club national circuit Rebel Tour (which debuted this year with 2 events), member the Portuguese national team in the bronze campaign in the Eurosurf 2013 in the Azores, leader of the Algarve Surf Circuit 2013 with two events still to be held.
The ‘Clube de Surf de Faro’ was represented in São Pedro do Estoril also by the club president Manuel Mestre . “It was miserable”, said ‘Necas’ to the Swell-Algarve. The veteran surfer from Faro finished the event in 9th position, eliminated in his second heat (quarter- finals). It was a bad event for Manuel Mestre but not as bad as the previous event of this circuit, where he had – by his own words – the best performance of his career. In that event, in Costa de Caparica, Luís Esteves had also a poor result, the only national event where he could not reach the final, which eventually cost him the Portuguese national title.
Bruno Grandela, who ‘ranked’ 4th after the two previous events, won the Event 3 in São Pedro do Estoril and won the Portuguese Longboard National title 2013. The surfer from Peniche, several times national champion, accumulates the national Longboard title this year with the Portuguese national champion title in of Stand Up Paddle (Race and Ocean) and winner of the Cup of Portugal in Longboard .
Remember that this is the second consecutive year that an athlete representing the ‘Clube de Surf de Faro’ wins the Longboard National runner-up title. In 2012, João Veríssimo concluded the championship 30 points short of the national title and Luís Esteves was ranked 4th. This year , Veríssimo did not disputed the Portuguese National Longboard Circuit.
