Marlon Lipke foi eliminado na 1ª ronda (R96) do Sata Airlines Azores Pro, evento Prime do circuito de qualificação mundial WQS da ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals), que decorre de 3 a 8 de Setembro na Ilha de São Miguel. O algarvio foi o segundo dos seis portugueses participantes a ‘ir ao fundo’ na Praia de Santa Bárbara: três ‘naufragaram’ no primeiro dia; dois no segundo e o último, Frederico ‘Kikas’ Morais, foi eliminado esta manhã, já na 2ª ronda (R48).
O campeonato tem estado a ser disputado em mar pequeno e com poucas ondas, ainda que com boa formação, o que obrigou a duas pausas nos dois primeiros dias de prova. Marlon Lipke entrou na água na quinta bateria do primeiro dia e foi traído pela maré a encher. O algarvio fez 6 ondas e a sua melhor foi um 3.83, terminando na 3ª posição de uma bateria dominada pelo norte-americano Kolohe Andino.
Nunca o Sata Airlines Azores Pro tinha tido tantos portugueses (6) em prova, mas a armada lusa naufragou nos três primeiros dias da prova. José Ferreira, vindo de um 4º lugar no 3 Estrelas ASP da Galiza, estreou-se logo na bateria de abertura do campeonato, terça-feira, dia 3 de Setembro. Concluiu a bateria em último (4º) e foi eliminado. Marlon Lipke foi afastado pouco depois e o açoriano Jacome Correia, 14 anos, foi o terceiro português a ser eliminado no primeiro dia, valendo-lhe a experiência de ter competido com CJ Hobgood, campeão mundial 2001 e vencedor desta prova em 2011.
No segundo dia de prova, ainda na Ronda de 96 (1ª ronda), Frederico ‘Kikas’ Morais foi o primeiro a entrar na água e venceu a sua bateria de forma categórica, mostrando estar a atravessar um bom momento de forma e o porquê da sua recente entrada no Top 100 mundial.
Poucas horas depois aconteceu o muito esperado regresso de Tiago Pires à competição. O surfista português do circuito mundial WCT esteve quatro meses parado devido a lesão e ainda não encontrou ritmo competitivo: foi 4º na sua bateria e saiu de prova. Ainda ontem e na Ronda de 96, o bi-campeão nacional Vasco Ribeiro também foi eliminado, ultrapassado no último terço da bateria pelo veterano Natan Hedge (de regresso após três anos de recuperação de toxicodependência), que ‘galgou’ do 3º para o 1º lugar da bateria.
Esta manhã, terceiro dia de prova e já com a 2ª ronda (R48) a decorrer, Frederico ‘Kikas’ Morais entrou na água na segunda bateria da jornada. O português líder do ‘ranking’ nacional começou bem e colocou-se na frente com duas ondas em cinco minutos. Mas, depois, pouco mais fez, num mar que continuava a dar poucas oportunidades, e acabou por ser eliminado em 3º numa bateria ganha por um inspiradíssimo Wiggolly Dantas, que chegou a fazer uma onda de 9.17, a segunda melhor do campeonato até àquele momento.
(actualização, dia 7 de Setembro): O brasileiro Tomas Hermes, 26 anos, venceu o Sata Airlines Azores Pro 2013, ganhando a final contra o favorito australiano Adam Melling, actual 27º do circuito mundial WCT. O brasileiro foi um autêntico ‘tomba-gigantes’ nos Açores, eliminando três surfistas ‘world tour’ (WCT) – Miguel Pupo, Filipe Toledo e Mitch Crews – no percurso até à final, onde conquistou a sua primeira grande vitória ASP, saltando para o 34º posto do ‘ranking mundial’. Registo ainda para o australiano Mitch Crews (actual suplente WCT), que ao chegar até à meia-final nos Açores, praticamente, garantiu a sua presença no próximo campeonato WCT.

SIX PORTUGUESE ELIMINATED IN 3 DAYS
Marlon Lipke was eliminated in the first round ( R96 ) of the Sata Airlines Azores Pro, Prime event the ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals) world qualification series WQS , which runs from 3rd to 8th September in São Miguel Island. The surfer from the Algarve was the second of six Portuguese participants to ‘ go deep ‘ in Santa Bárbara Beach: three went down on the first day, two in the second and the sixth, Frederico ‘ Kikas ‘ Morais, was eliminated this morning , already in the 2nd round (R48) .
The event has been being fought in small sea and with few waves, even with good formation, forcing two holds in the first two days of competition. Marlon Lipke entered the water in the fifth heat of the first day and was betrayed by the incoming tide. The ‘algarvean’ made 6 waves and his best was a 3.83, finishing 3rd in a heat dominated by American Kolohe Andino.
Never Sata Airlines Azores Pro had so many Portuguese ( 6 ) in the race, but the ‘lusa fleet’ sank in the first three days of the event. José Ferreira , coming from a 4th place in the 3 Stars ASP Galicia, debuted on the opening heat of the event, Tuesday, 3rd September. He completed the heat last (4th) and was eliminated . Marlon Lipke was removed shortly after and Azorean Jacome Correia, 14, was the third Portuguese to be eliminated on the first day, earning him the experience of having competed with CJ Hobgood , world champion in 2001 and winner of this event in 2011 .
On the second day of the event, still in the Round of 96 (1st round) , Frederico ‘ Kikas ‘ Morais was the first to enter the water and won his heat emphatically, showing to be in top shape and why he recently entered the world Top 100.
A few hours later came the long-awaited return of Tiago Pires to competition. The Portuguese surfer of the world circuit WCT was stopped for four months due to injury and has yet to find competitive pace: he was 4th on his heat and left the race. Yesterday and still in Round 96, the two time Portuguese national champion Vasco Ribeiro was also eliminated, exceeded in the last third of the heat by veteran Nathan Hedge (returning after three years of recovery from drug addiction), which ‘ ascended ‘ from the 3rd to the 1st place in the heat.
This morning, the third day of the event and already in the 2nd round (R48), Frederico ‘ Kikas’ Morais entered the water in the second heat of the day. The Portuguese leader of the Portuguese national ranking started well and put himself in the lead with two waves in five minutes. But after that he did little more in a sea that continued to give little opportunities and was eventually eliminated: 3rd in a heat won by Wiggolly Dantas, who made a 9.17 wave, the second best in the event until that moment.
