Luís Esteves, atleta do Clube de Surf de Faro (CSF) venceu a 1ª Etapa do Circuito Nacional de Longboard, disputada na Praia de Cortegaça, Ovar, nos dias 17 e 18 de Agosto. A atravessar o melhor momento de forma da sua carreira, o ‘longboarder’ algarvio impôs-se numa final com um alinhamento de luxo e assumiu a sua candidatura ao título de campeão nacional 2013. “Este ano, o título volta para o Algarve”, disse ao Swell-Algarve.
Na final em Cortegaça, Luís Esteves competiu com Ruben Silva (campeão nacional 2012), Sebastião Maia (jovem esperança do Longboard português e atleta da selecção nacional de juniores) e Bruno Grandela (vencedor Longboard da Taça de Portugal de Surfing 2013). “A final foi difícil. Andei perdido e estava em 3º perto do fim, mas virei o heat nas duas últimas ondas”, explicou Luís Esteves ao Swell-Algarve. Com mar pequeno e on-shore, o atleta algarvio conseguiu apanhar uma onda de set com ligação do outside ao inside e fez um 8.5, que o motivou para uma segunda onda com ‘back-up’ suficiente para vencer a bateria.
Luís Esteves, 25 anos de idade, foi 4º classificado no ‘ranking’ nacional de Longboard 2012 (circuito com 4 etapas) e venceu a competição Longboard do Circuito de Surf do Algarve 2012. Este ano, lidera 3 circuitos: o Circuito Nacional de Longboard (vitória na única etapa até ao momento), o novo circuito nacional inter-clubes Longboard Rebel Tour 2013 (uma vitória e um segundo lugar em duas etapas) e a competição Longboard do Circuito de Surf do Algarve 2013 (uma vitória e um segundo lugar em duas etapas). “Este é o meu melhor ano de surf. Tenho tido umas pranchas mágicas (Lufi) e estou a sentir-me bem. Vou tentar vencer os dois circuitos nacionais. E se houver Europeu em Portugal (S. Pedro do Estoril, em Novembro ou Dezembro), vou tentar ir ao top 5”, admitiu Luís Esteves ao Swell-Algarve.
Recordamos que, em Fevereiro deste ano, na Praia de Faro, Luís Esteves venceu a 1ª Etapa Longboard do Circuito de Surf do Algarve 2013, também 1ª Etapa do Longboard Rebel Tour 2013 impondo-se na final a Ruben Silva, Sebastião Maia e Eurico Gonçalves, campeão nacional 2009. Após 8 anos de Longboard – uma especialidade que iniciou por sugestão de Manuel Mestre ‘Necas’ durante um campeonato em Ribeira d’Ihas, Ericeira -, Luís Esteves perdeu o nervosismo e está com sede de títulos.
Ainda sem patrocínios, apenas com apoios da Pipeline Surf Shop e do Ditadura Bar (Faro), Luís Esteves procura conjugar da melhor forma a sua vida profissional com o tempo necessário para treinar e conseguir estar presente nas provas. “Adorava ser profissional. É um sonho. Mas é muito difícil, porque o Longboard não tem marcas a apoiar”.
O Clube de Surf de Faro, que muito tem feito pelo Longboard português, esteve presente em Cortegaça com 3 atletas: Luís Esteves, Manuel Mestres ‘Necas’ e Inês Martins. Talvez por estar incluída no evento Surf at Night, a 1ª Etapa do Circuito Nacional de Longboard teve check-ins da parte da tarde, desperdiçando as melhores condições de mar que se fizeram sempre sentir pela manhã. A prova teve um total de 18 atletas. Inês Martins foi 13ª classificada e Manuel Mestre ‘Necas’ terminou o campeonato na 5ª posição da classificação final, insatisfeito com o julgamento. “Fiquei em 5º fruto de uma decisão errada dos juízes, que marcaram uma interferência que só eles viram”, desabafou ‘Necas’ na rede social Facebook.
A próxima etapa do Circuito Nacional de Longboard ainda não tem data marcada. A próxima etapa (3ª) do circuito nacional inter-clubes Longboard Rebel Tour 2013 vai decorrer no fim-de-semana de 14 e 15 de Setembro (estava inicialmente prevista para 31 de Agosto e 1 de Setembro), na Figueira da Foz.

LUIS ESTEVES WINS EVENT 1
Luis Esteves, representing ‘Clube de Surf de Faro’ (CSF) won the Event 1 of the Portuguese National Longboard Circuit, held at Praia de Cortegaça, Ovar, on 17 and 18 August. Going through the best form in his career, the ‘longboarder’ from the Algarve imposed himself over an alignment of luxury in the final and assumed his candidacy for the national championship title in 2013. “This year, the title will be back to the Algarve,” he said to the Swell-Algarve.
In the final in Cortegaça, Luis Esteves competed with Ruben Silva (2012 national champion), Sebastião Maia (young hope of Longboard and Portuguese national junior team athlete) and Bruno Grandela (winner Longboard of the Surfing Cup of Portugal 2013). “The final was difficult. I was lost and 3rd near the end, but I turned the heat in the last two waves,” said Luis Esteves to Swell-Algarve. With small on-shore sea, the athlete from the Algarve pick up a set wave from the outside to the inside and won 8.5 points score, which led to a second wave for the necessary ‘back-up’ to win the heat.
Luis Esteves, 25, was ranked 4th in the Portuguese National Longboard Circuit 2012 (circuit with 4 events) and won the Longboard competition of the Algarve Surf Tour 2012. This year he tops 3 circuits: Portuguese National Longboard Circuit 2013 (single stage victory to date), the new national inter-club circuit Longboard Rebel Tour 2013 (a win and a second place in two events) and the Longboard competition on the Algarve Surf Tour 2013 (a win and a second place in two events). “This is my best year of surf. I have two magic boards (Lufi) and I’m feeling good. I will try to win the two national circuits. And if we will have the European in Portugal (S. Pedro do Estoril, in November or December), I will try to reach the top 5”, admitted Luís Esteves to Swell-Algarve.
We recall that in February this year, at Praia de Faro, Luis Esteves won Event 1 in Longboard of the Algarve Surf Tour 2013, also Event 1 for the Longboard Rebel Tour 2013 imposing himself in the final over Ruben Silva, Sebastião Maia and Eurico Gonçalves Portuguese national champion in 2009. After 8 years of Longboard – initiated by suggestion of Manuel Mestre ‘Necas’ during a championship in Ribeira d’Ihas, Ericeira – Luís Esteves lost the nervousness and wants titles.
Still without any sponsorship, having only the support of the Pipeline Surf Shop and Ditadura Bar (Faro), Luís Esteves seeks to combine his professional life with the time required to train and be able to be present in championships. “I’d love to be professional.It’s a dream. But it is very difficult, because almost no marks sponsor Longboard.”
‘Clube de Surf de Faro’, which has done much for Portuguese Longboard, was present in Cortegaça with 3 players: Luis Esteves, Manuel Mestre ‘Necas’ and Inês Martins. Perhaps by being included in the Surf at Night event, this first stage of the Portuguese National Longboard Circuit 2013 had check-ins always in the afternoon, wasting the best sea conditions that did always feel in the morning. The event had a total of 18 athletes. Inês Martins was ranked 13th and Manuel Mestre ‘Necas’ finished the championship in 5th position, dissatisfied with the judgment. “I was 5th in result of a wrong decision of the judges, who marked an interference that only they saw,” vented ‘Necas’ on the social network Facebook.
The next stage of the Portuguese National Longboard Circuit 2013 has no date. The next step (3rd) of the Portuguese national inter-club Longboard RebelTour 2013 will take place on the weekend of August 31 and September 1, in Figueira da Foz.
