“O meu objectivo é ganhar. Mas chegar ao Top 10 é bom”. Tiago Serra está em Riva del Garda, Itália, para disputar o Campeonato do Mundo de Optimist 2013 e partiu com expectativas elevadas, para um lago onde já este ano conquistou um 10º lugar no maior encontro internacional desta classe de vela. Com 15 anos de idade e um palmarés invejável, o jovem velejador do Clube de Vela de Lagos está a concluir o seu último ano em Optimist, com resultados notáveis, e falou ao Swell-Algarve sobre as suas expectativas em relação ao futuro.
Em oito anos de vela (Optimist), Tiago Serra foi Campeão Nacional de Infantis em 2009 e é bi-Campeão Nacional de Juvenis (2012 e 2013). Venceu todas as provas em que participou no Campeonato de Vela Ligeira do Algarve 2012/2013 e só não se sagrou campeão por ter sido desclassificado ao faltar à etapa em Olhão, quando foi a Luanda vencer uma prova com os melhores velejadores angolanos.
Em Março deste ano, Tiago Serra conquistou o 10º lugar na classificação final do 31ª Encontro Internacional de Optimist, a maior prova mundial desta classe de vela, que teve este ano 1126 atletas inscritos, em representação de 30 países. A classificação obtida por Tiago nesta prova pode ser decisiva para iniciar um percurso de alta competição, caso obtenha também um bom resultado no Mundial, que decorre de 15 a 26 de Julho.

Tiago Serra está numa encruzilhada. “Ainda não decidi o meu futuro. Aqui no Algarve só há Laser e eu não gosto dos Laser. Prefiro os 420 ou os 29ers, mas ainda não se sabe”, disse Tiago ao Swell-Algarve. Por isso é ainda mais importante o resultado no Mundial, porque pode abrir as portas a uma carreira de alta competição ao talentoso velejador.
O facto de o Mundial decorrer no Lago Garda é vantajoso para Tiago Serra, porque foi aí que disputou em Março o 31º Encontro Internacional de Optimist. Nessa prova, Tiago considera que “podia ter feito melhor”, mas admite que “foi um bom treino para o Mundial”. O velejador algarvio dá-se bem com vento forte e essa pode ser uma condição decisiva para o seu resultado no Mundial. Na última regata da prova em Março o vento esteve mais forte e Tiago foi 2º classificado, o que diz bem das suas capacidades para se impor nessas condições de vento.

TIAGO SERRA WANTS TO WIN
“My goal is to win. But getting to the Top 10 is good.” Tiago Serra is in Riva del Garda, Italy, to compete in the Optimist World Championship 2013 and travelled with high expectations, to a a lake where earlier this year he won a 10th place in the largest international gathering of this sailing class. 15 years old and a enviable history, the young sailor representing Clube de Vela de Lagos is completing his last year in Optimist, with remarkable results, and spoke to Swell-Algarve about his expectations for the future.
In eight years of sailing (Optimist), Tiago Serra was Portuguese Champion ‘Infantis’ in 2009 and is two times Portuguese Champion ‘Juvenis’ (2012 and 2013). He had won all the events in which he participated in the Algarve Dinghy Championship 2012/2013 and failled to win the championship only because he was disqualified for missing one event in Olhão, when he travelled to Luanda and won a race with the best sailors from Angola.
In March this year, Tiago Serra won 10th place in the 31st International Optimist Meeting, the greatest world event of this class sailing, which this year had 1126 registered athletes, representing 30 countries. The classification obtained by Tiago in this event can be decisive to start a high competition career, should he also get a good result at the World Championship, which takes place 15-26 July.
Tiago Serra is at a crossroads. “I have not decided my future. In Algarve I only have Lasers and I do not like the Laser. I Prefer the 420 or the 29ers, but I still don’t know,” said Tiago to Swell-Algarve. It is therefore even more important to Tiago the outcome in World Championship, because it can open doors to a career in professional competition.
The fact that the World Championship will be held at Lake Garda is advantageous for Tiago Serra, because it was there that he competed in March for the 31st International Optimist Meeting. In that event, Tiago believes that he “could have done better,” but admits that “it was a good workout for the World Championship.” The sailor from the Algarve is stronger with strong wind and this can be a decisive condition for his result in the World Championship. In the last regatta of the event in March the wind was stronger and Tiago finished 2nd, which speaks well of its capabilities with strong wind.
