Francisco Duarte (Clube Naval de Portimão) foi 2º na classificação final Sub-16 da 2ª Etapa (última) do Rip Curl GromSearch 2013 em Portugal, disputada na Praia Internacional, Matosinhos, Porto, no fim-de-semana 18 e 19 de Maio. O jovem surfista de Portimão ficou a escassos 20 pontos de se apurar para a final Europeia desta competição de prospecção mundial de talentos, mas confirmou o seu bom momento de forma ao disputar no Porto a sua quarta final consecutiva em provas nacionais, um feito notável e singular.
Francisco Duarte (‘Xico’) ‘varreu’ todos os seus heats no caminho para a final no Porto, lutando pela qualificação europeia que o 3º lugar na 1ª Etapa do GromSearch, na Costa de Caparica, mantinha em aberto. “Na final, não ganhou por um triz. Caiu na finalização da manobra na onda que daria o ‘back up’ que lhe faltava. Precisava de um 5.1 para chegar ao 1º lugar e teve um 4.40”, comentou Francisco Canelas, treinador de Francisco Duarte. “Foi mesmo azar. O Xico surfou muito bem e merecia ter ganho e ir à final (europeia) em França”, concluiu o treinador.
A vitória na prova GromSearch no Porto acabou por ser alcançada pelo experiente Guilherme Fonseca, atleta da Rip Curl e campeão nacional Sub-16 e Sub-18 em título. Os dois vencedores do Rip Curl GromSearch Portugal 2013, que vão representar o País na final Europeia, são o portuense João André (1ª na Caparica e 4º no Porto, com um total de 1670 pontos) e o penichense Guilherme Fonseca (5º na Caparica e 1º no Porto, com um total de 1610 pontos).

Francisco Duarte ficou a 20 pontos do apuramento europeu GromSearch, totalizando 1590 pontos com o 3º lugar na Caparica e o 2º lugar no Porto. Fica o registo da excelente qualidade do surf que mostrou nesta competição e o recorde de quatro finais consecutivas em provas nacionais: duas no GromSearch (3º na Caparica e 2º no Porto) e duas no Circuito Nacional Esperanças 2013 (1º na Caparica e 4º em Peniche). Francisco Duarte é o único totalista Sub-16 em finais nacionais na presente época desportiva.
Outros dois atletas do Clube Naval de Portimão, também treinados por Francisco Canelas, participaram na etapa Sub-16 GromSearch no Porto. Martim Magalhães voltou a não ser feliz e repetiu o 17º lugar alcançado na primeira etapa, na Costa de Caparica. António Silveira estreou-se nesta competição qualificando-se no seu heat nos ‘trials’, mas foi igualmente eliminado nos oitavos-de-final, terminando também na 17ª posição.
O Rip Curl GromSearch presented by Posca disputou-se em Portugal nas categorias Sub-12, Sub-14, Sub-16 e Sub-16 Feminino, mas serviu apenas para apurar os quatro (dois masculinos e dois femininos) representantes Sub-16 de Portugal para a final Europeia. João André e Guilherme Fonseca vão ser os representantes masculinos de Portugal nessa final. Teresa Bonvalot (1ª na Caparica e 3ª no Porto) e a jovem surpresa, local da Caparica, Inês Bispo (2ª na Caparica e 1ª no Porto) vão ser as representantes lusas na final europeia feminina.
A final Europeia ainda não tem data e local definidos, muito embora se comente que deverá ser disputada em França. A data e o local dependem do melhor swell a descobrir pela Rip Curl. Os dois vencedores da final Europeia vão representar a Europa na final Mundial, que vai ser disputada em Bells Beach, na Austrália, em paralelo com a etapa WCT no mesmo local em 2014.

FRANCISCO DUARTE 20 POINTS SHORT TO QUALIFY
Francisco Duarte (Clube Naval de Portimão) was 2nd in the final standings in the age group Under-16 in Event 2 (last) of the Rip Curl GromSearch 2013 in Portugal, held in Praia International, Matosinhos, Oporto, on Sunday 19th May. The young surfer from Portimão was just 20 points short to qualify for the European final of this world prospecting talents competition, but confirmed his good moment by competing in his fourth consecutive final in national events, a remarkable and singular achievement.
Francisco Duarte (‘Xico’) ‘swept’ all his heats on the way to the final in Oporto, fighting for the European qualification that the 3rd place in the Event 1 of GromSearch in Costa de Caparica, kept open. “In the final, he didn’t won by a whisker. He didn’t complete the maneuver on the wave that would give the ‘back up’ he lacked. He needed a 5.1 to get to 1st place and got a 4.40,” said Francisco Canelas, coach of Francisco Duarte. “It was really unlucky. Xico surfed really well and deserved to win and go to the (european) final in France,” concluded the coach.
The victory in the Oporto GromSearch was eventually achieved by experienced Guilherme Fonseca, Rip Curl athlete and Portuguese champion Under-16 and Under-18. The two winners of the Rip Curl GromSearch Portugal in 2013, which will represent the Portugal in the European final, are João André from Oporto (1st in Caparica and 4th in Oporto, with a total of 1670 points) and Guilherme Fonseca from Peniche (5th in Caparica and 1st in Oporto, with a total of 1610 points).
Francisco Duarte failed to qualify for the European GromSearch by only 20 points, totaling 1590 points with a 3rd place in Caparica and 2nd place in Porto. He showed an excellent quality in his surf and achieved a record of four consecutive finals at national events: two in GromSearch (3rd in Caparica and 2nd in Porto) and two in the National Youth Circuit 2013 (1st in Caparica and 4th in Peniche) . Francisco Duarte is the only totalist Sub-16 in national finals of this season.
Two other athletes representing Clube Naval de Portimão, also trained by Francisco Canelas, participated in the Under-16 GromSearch in Oporto. Martim Magalhães was once more time unlucky and repeated the 17th place achieved in Event 1, in Costa de Caparica. António Silveira debuted this competition in Oporto by qualifying in the ‘trials’, but was also eliminated in the eighth-finals, finishing in 17th position also.
The Rip Curl GromSearch presented by Posca was disputed in Portugal in Under-12 Under-14, Under-16 and Under-16 Female age groups, but served only to determine the four (two male and two female) Under-16 representatives from Portugal for the European final. André João and Guilherme Fonseca will be the male representatives of Portugal at that final. Teresa Bonvalot (1st in Caparica and 3rd in Oporto) and surprise young surfer from Caparica, Inês Bispo (2nd in Caparica and 1st in Oporto) will be the representatives in the women European final.
The European final has no end date and place set, although ther are comments that will be played in France. The date and location depend on the best swell to be discover by Rip Curl. The two winners of the European final will represent Europe in the World Final, which will be played at Bells Beach, Australia, in parallel with the WCT event at the same site in 2014.
