Miguel Martinho foi 15º na classificação geral do Campeonato do Mundo de Formula Windsurfing 2012, que decorreu em Liepãja, Letónia. O atleta algarvio, do Clube Naval de Portimão, subiu ao terceiro lugar no pódio da Divisão de Pesos-Leves, abaixo dos 75 quilos.
O campeonato terminou no passado sábado, dia 25 de Agosto. As condições para a prática do windusrf no Mar Báltico “não foram as melhores”, com vento muito onshore e o mar muito picado, o que provocou alguns acidentes e obrigou os atletas a “trabalhar bastante”, comentou Miguel Martinho ao Swell-Algarve.

O atleta português, que foi terceiro no ranking mundial de 2011, queria ter terminado o campeonato na Letónia entre os cinco primeiros, num total de 108 participantes. “Ambicionava outra posição, mas a participação foi positiva”, concluiu Miguel Martinho, lamentando não ter tido hipóteses de participar em mais provas de topo, “para afinar material”. Ainda assim, reconhece, “o Clube Naval de Portimão tem dado um apoio grande”.
Miguel Martinho está já em preparação para o Campeonato Espanhol de Formula Windsurfing, que decorre em Cadiz, no fim-de-semana de 8 e 9 de Setembro. E vai também participar, em Outubro, no Campeonato Europeu de Formula Windsurfing, em Conil de la Frontera, Espanha.

MIGUEL MARTINHO 15º IN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
Miguel Martinho finished 15th in the overall standings of the Formula Windsurfing World Championship 2012, in Liepãja, Latvia. The portuguese athlete, representing Clube Naval de Portimão, was 3rd in the Lightweight Division, for athletes weighting less than 75 kilos.
The world championship finished last saturday, August 25. The conditions to windsurfing in the Baltic Sea “were not the best”, with strong onshore wind putting a difficult swell. There were some accidents and the athletes “had to work much more”, said Miguel Martinho to Swell-Algarve.
The portuguese athlete from Algarve, 3rd in the world ranking 2011, wanted to finish the world championship in Latvia between the first five, in a total of 108 competitors. “I wanted more, but the result was positive”, said Miguel Martinho, underlining that he was not able to be present in other international events before and that would have been important to tune up his equipment.
Miguel Martinho is already training to the Formula Windsurfing Spanish Championship, in Cadiz, September 8 and 9. He will also compete in the Formula Windsurfing European Championship, in Conil de la Frontera, Spain, in October.
