Miguel Martinho (Clube Naval de Portimão) sagrou-se ontem Vice-Campeão do Mundo Master de Formula Windsurfing. O atleta algarvio concluiu na segunda posição da sua categoria o mundial que foi disputado em Gallipoli, Itália, de 30 de Junho a 5 de Julho. “O campeonato correu melhor do que eu esperava”, comentou o velejador de Portimão.
O Mundial de Gallipoli foi disputado nas categorias Juventude e Masters e teve cinco dias efectivos de competição com um total de 15 regatas. “Tivemos de tudo, vento fraco, forte e bons atletas”, escreveu Miguel Martinho na sua página no Facebook. O atleta algarvio venceu 5 das 15 regatas de ‘masters’ e manteve durante toda a prova uma luta intensa com Janis Preiss, da Letónia, que acabou por vencer o campeonato na categoria Masters. “A minha luta com o Janis foi muito boa. É um grande atleta, muito consistente e super rápido. Parabéns”, escreveu Miguel Martinho, numa grande demonstração de desportivismo.
Presente neste mundial esteve outro atleta algarvio, João Pedro Santos, que se debateu com bolhas nas mãos e não conseguiu competir no quinto e último dia da prova. Ainda assim, João Pedro Santos concluiu o campeonato na 23ª posição da Frota Master, 11º classificado na sub-categoria ‘Grandmaster’.

MIGUEL MARTINHO FIRST RUNNER UP
Miguel Martinho, representing the ‘Clube Naval de Portimão’ from the Algarve, achieved the first runner up world masters title in formula windsurfing. The sailor from Portimão finished second in the world championship held in Gallipoli, Italy, from 30th June to 5th July.
During five days of competition the sailors contested 15 regattas and Miguel Martinho won five of them. The athlete from the Algarve had an intense fight for the first place with Janis Preiss, from Latvia, who ended up winning the masters world title.”The competition with Janis was very good. He is a great athlete, consistent and very fast. Congratulations”, said Miguel Martinho.
