O canoísta Diogo Lopes, atleta do Kayak Clube Castores do Arade (KCCA), sagrou-se vice-campeão do Mundo em K1 200 Juniores. O atleta algarvio, campeão da Europa em título, percorreu os 200 metros em 35s708, falhando por apenas 9 milésimos de segundo a medalha de ouro nos Mundiais de Canoagem Sub-23 e Junior, em Welland, Canadá.

Diogo Lopes apurou-se para a Final A com o terceiro melhor registo e voou na derradeira regata, terminando a 9 milésimos do ‘medalha de ouro’, o húngaro Balázs Birkás. O terceiro classificado nesta final K1 200 foi o polaco Pawel Kaczmarek. “Sem dúvida, esta foi a minha melhor época, mas espero conseguir melhores”, comentou Diogo Lopes, recordando que também este ano conquistou o título europeu em K1 200 e mostrando ambição para mais resultados: “Espero melhor resultado no próximo ano em Sub-23 e Seniores. O objectivo principal é ir aos Jogos (Olímpicos) de 2016 no Rio de Janeiro“.
Portugal esteve presente com 9 atletas nos Mundiais de Canoagem Sub-23 e Junior em Welland, Canadá, que juntaram um total de 900 canoístas, em representação de 68 países. A selecção portuguesa disputou hoje um total de seis finais A. As medalhas de prata obtidas por Diogo Lopes (KCCA) em K1 200 Juniores e por Joana Vasconcelos (Benfica) em K1 200 Sub-23 foram os melhores resultados lusos.

O Kayak Clube Castores do Arade (KCCA) colocou um segundo atleta na selecção nacional para estes Mundiais no Canadá: Cristian Baies, junior de origem moldava e único representante português na distância dos 1000 metros (K1). Nesta sua primeira competição internacional, Cristian Baies falhou a presença na Final A por apenas um lugar e disputou a Final B de K1 1000 Juniores, concluindo a prova na 4ª posição (3m45s093).

The canoeist Diogo Lopes (Kayak Clube Castores do Arade – KCCA) won the runner-up World Champion Junior K1 200 title. The athlete from the Algarve, European champion 2013, ran the 200 meters in 35s708, failing by just nine thousandths of a second the gold medal at the Kayak World Junior and Under 23 Championships in Welland, Canada.
Diogo Lopes qualified for the final with the third best time and flew in the final race, finishing second, 9 thousandths off the ‘gold medal’, won by Hungarian Balázs Birkás. Third placed K1 200 was for Polish Pawel Kaczmarek. “Without a doubt, this was my best sports season, but I hope to get better,” said Diogo Lopes, recalling that also this year he have won the European title in K1 200 and showing ambition for more results: “I expect better results next year in Sub-23 and Seniors. The main objective is to go to the 2016 Games (Olympic) in Rio de Janeiro. “

The Kayak Clube Castores do Arade (KCCA) placed a second athlete in the Portuguese national team for these World Championships in Canada: Cristian Baies, junior of Moldovan origin and the only Portuguese representative in the distance of 1000 meters (K1). In his first international competition, Cristian Baies missed out a placed in the Final A by just one place and competed in the Final B of K1 1000 Juniors, finishing the race in the 4th position (3m45s093).
