Francisco Duarte (Clube Naval de Portimão) terminou em terceiro lugar Sub-16 a 1ª Etapa do Rip Curl GromSearch presented by POSCA, que decorreu no fim-de-semana 11 e 12 de Maio, na Praia do CDS, Costa de Caparica, Lisboa. O jovem surfista algarvio vai disputar a 2ª Etapa já no próximo fim-de-semana, no Porto, perseguindo o sonho de estar presente na final mundial do GromSearch, na etapa do WCT 2014 em Bells Beach, Austrália.

O GroomSearch na Costa de Caparica foi brindado com condições clássicas, sol e offshore com ondas de metro. Francisco Duarte partilhou o favoritismo com Guilherme Fonseca, mas o surfista de Peniche não foi feliz na Praia do CDS. Francisco Duarte chegou à final e participou na luta intensa pela vitória, que deixou os três primeiros separados por apenas um ponto numa bateria com surf de muito alto nível. O surfista algarvio, treinado pelo experiente Francisco Canelas, terá sido alvo de uma interferência na final, que lhe teria valido o segundo lugar, mas que escapou aos olhos dos juízes.
Participaram nesta 1ª Etapa do GromSearch outros dois surfistas de Portimão: Martim Magalhães (13º – treinado por Francisco Canelas) e José Montez (33º – treinado pela FutureSurfingSchool), ambos em Sub-16. No próximo fim-de-semana, 18 e 19 de Maio, esta representação de Portimão na 2ª Etapa do GroomSearch vai ser reforçada com António Silveira e Ricardo Batista (‘Ricky’).
As duas etapas do Rip Curl GromSearch presented by POSTA em Portugal – apesar de serem disputadas em Sub-12, Sub-14, Sub-16 e Femininos – vão apurar os quatro melhores surfistas (dois masculinos e dois femininos) Sub-16 portugueses, para representar o País na final Europeia. Esta final ainda não tem data e local confirmados (deverá ser em França), estando dependente do melhor swell na Europa encontrado pela Rip Curl.
Os dois vencedores da final Europeia irão representar a Europa na final Mundial, que vai ser disputada em Bells Beach, Austrália, em paralelo com a etapa WCT no mesmo local em 2014. É a presença neste palco que faz sonhar a nova geração de surfistas portugueses. Recorde-se que do Rip Curl GromSearch saíram vencedores, desde 1999, algumas das actuais estrelas WCT: Gabriel Medina, Matt Wilkinson, Owen Wright, Stephanie Gilmore, Sally Fitzgibons, Alana Blanchard e Tyler Wright.

FRANCISCO DUARTE FINISHED 3RD IN CAPARICA
Francisco Duarte (Clube Naval de Portimão) finished third Under-16 in Event 1 of the Rip Curl GromSearch presented by Posca, held on weekend 11th and 12th May at the CDS Beach, Costa de Caparica, Lisbon . The young surfer from the Algarve will compete in the 2nd Event in Porto as early as next weekend, chasing the dream of being present at the World Final of the GromSearch, at the WCT 2014 event in Bells Beach, Australia.
The GromSearch in Costa de Caparica was presented with classical conditions, sun and waves with offshore and one meter high. Francisco Duarte shared favoritism with Guilherme Fonseca, but the surfer from Peniche was not happy in CDS Beach. Francisco Duarte reached the final and participated in the intense struggle for victory, which left the top three separated by just a point in a battery with very high level of surfing. The young surfer from the Algarve, trained by experienced Francisco Canelas, may have been the target of an interference in the end, that would have been worth the second spot, but fault iluded the judges’ eyes.
Two other surfers from Portimão, also trained by Francisco Canelas, competed in the 1st Event of the GromSearch: Martim Magelhães (17º) and José Montez (33º), both in Under-16. Next weekend, 18th and 19th May, this team from Portimão will be reinforced with António Silveira and Ricardo Batista (‘Ricky’) for Event 2 of the GromSearch in Portugal.
The two Events of the Rip Curl GromSearch presented by POSCA in Portugal – despite being played on Under-12, Under-14, Under-16 and Women – will qualify the top four Under-16 Portuguese surfers (two boys and two girls) to represent Portugal in the European final. This has no date and venue confirmed (maybe in France) and is dependent on the best swell in Europe found by Rip Curl.
The two winners of the European final will represent Europe in the World Final, which will be played at Bells Beach, Australia, in parallel with the WCT 2014 Event. A presence on this world stage stage makes the younger generation dreaming. Remember that the Rip Curl GromSearch discovered, since 1999, some of the current WCT stars: Gabriel Medina, Matt Wilkinson, Owen Wright, Stephanie Gilmore, Sally Fitzgibons, Alana Blanchard and Tyler Wright.
