Os algarvios Luís Esteves (Longboard) e Marlon Lipke (Open Surf) integraram o grupo de surfistas escolhidos pela Federação Portuguesa de Surf para formar a Selecção de Portugal no Azores Eurosurf 2013, disputado na Praia de Santa Bárbara, Ribeira Grande, Ilha de São Miguel, entre os dias 15 e 21 de Setembro. O ‘longboarder’ do Clube de Surf de Faro concluiu a sua categoria na 9ª posição e o surfista do Algarve Surf Clube foi 5º no Open, falhando o acesso directo à ‘finalíssima’ das medalhas por escassas duas décimas. Portugal não conseguiu revalidar o título; conquistou a medalha de Bronze.
A Selecção de Surf de Portugal procurava o quinto título europeu, mas não alcançou o objectivo. Apesar das medalhas individuais de ouro de Hugo Pinheiro (Bodyboard Open) e de Ruben Gonzalez (Surf Senior) e das medalhas de prata de Rodrigo Herédia (Surf Master) e de bronze de Catarina Sousa (Bodyboard Senhoras), a selecção lusa não conseguiu pontos suficientes para ir além do 3º lugar na geral por equipas.
O Eurosurf 2013 foi ganho pela França, seguida pela Espanha, ambas com equipas muito fortes no ‘line up’ açoreano. De acordo com algumas fontes, os primeiros dias do campeonato ficaram marcados por alguma polémica relativa aos julgamentos, sobretudo, dos juízes franceses. “Houve uma chamada de atenção e as coisas melhoraram. Ainda assim, houve um caso ou outro que toda a gente considerou esquisito”, admitiu o seleccionador nacional José Braga, citado pela ‘Beachcam’.
A competição em cada uma das categorias de surf decorreu em quadros paralelos de apuramento para a ‘finalíssima’ das medalhas: o quadro principal de qualificação (P) e o quadro de repescagens (R). Os dois primeiros classificados na final de cada um dos quadros de apuramento (P+R) disputaram a ‘finalíssima’ das medalhas (a quatro) em cada uma das categorias de surf.

O Longboard foi a primeira competição a ser concluída, logo nos primeiros dias do campeonato. Luís Esteves fez um percurso idêntico ao do campeão nacional de Longboard, Ruben Silva, que por vezes também compete pelo Clube de Surf de Faro. O algarvio Luís Esteves venceu a sua bateria de estreia, foi segundo na ronda seguinte e, depois, terceiro nas meias-finais de qualificação (P). Passou para a ronda seguinte nas repescagens (R), mas voltou a ser terceiro, concluindo a prova na 9ª posição.

Marlon Lipke (chamado à selecção à última hora, em substituição de Eduardo Fernandes) também venceu a sua bateria de estreia no Surf Open, com um ‘score’ alto (15.16), e foi avançando em segundo até à final de qualificação (P), onde falhou o 2º lugar de apuramento directo para a ‘grande final’ por escassas duas décimas. Ainda disputou a final de repescagem (R), mas voltou a ser 3º e não conseguiu acesso à ‘finalíssima’ das medalhas. O algarvio foi o português que mais longe chegou na categoria Surf Open.

ATHLETES FROM THE ALGARVE IN THE PORTUGUESE NATIONAL TEAM
Luís Esteves (Longboard) and Marlon Lipke (Surf Open) both from the Algarve joined the group of surfers chosen by the Portuguese Surfing Federation to form the Portuguese National Team for the Azores Eurosurf 2013, held at Santa Barbara Beach, Ribeira Grande , São Miguel Island, between 15 and 21 September. The ‘ longboarder ‘ from the ‘Clube de Surf de Faro’ placed 9th in his category and the surfer from Algarve Surf Clube was 5th in the Surf Open, failing to qualify directly to the final of the medals byscarce two tenths. Portugal failed to retain the title; won the Bronze medal .
The Portuguese National Surf Team sought the fifth European title fro Portugal, but did not reach the goal . Despite individual gold medals won by Hugo Pinheiro (Bodyboard Open) and Ruben Gonzalez (Surf Senior) and a silver medal won by Rodrigo Heredia (Surf Master) and a bronze medal gained by Catarina Sousa (Bodyboard Ladies) , the Portuguese National Surf Team failed to gain enough points to go beyond 3rd place overall teams .
The Eurosurf 2013 was won by France, followed by Spain, both with very strong teams in the Azorean ‘line up’. According to some sources , the early days of the tournament were marked by some controversy concerning judgments, especially by the French judges . “There was a call for attention and things improved. Yet, there was one case or another that everyone felt weird”, said the Portuguese national head coach José Braga, quoted by ‘ Beachcam ‘ .
The competition in each of the surf categories was held in parallel clearance routes to qualify for the great final of the medals : the main framework of qualifications ( P ) and frame recaps ( R ) . The top two surfers at the end of each frame of clearance ( P and R ) competed in the great final of medals (four athletes in the great final) in each of the categories of surfing.
The Longboard competition was the first to be completed , in the early days of the championship. Luis Esteves made a path similar to the Portuguese National Longboard Champion, Ruben Silva, who also sometimes competes for ‘Clube de Surf de Faro’. The Algarvean Luís Esteves won his debut heat, placed second in the next round , and then third in the qualification (P). He moved to the next round recaps (R), but was again third, completing the event in the 9th position .
Marlon Lipke (last minute call to the Portuguese National Surf Team , replacing Eduardo Fernandes) also won his first heat in Surf Open, with a high score (15.16) , and placed consecutive second places in his way to the qualification ( P ) final, where he missed the 2nd direct clearance to the ‘ grand finale ‘ by scarce two tenths . He moved to the recap ( R ) final, but placed 3rd and failed to qualify to the big final. The Portuguese from the Algarve was the surfer that far arrived in category Surf Open.
