Miguel Martinho sagrou-se Campeão da Europa de Formula Windsurfing. O atleta do Clube Naval de Portimão venceu o campeonato disputado na Praia da Vitória, Ilha Terceira, Açores, entre os dias 30 de Abril e 5 de Maio, aguentando a forte pressão de “atletas de topo mundial” e conquistando pela primeira vez este título europeu. “Não ia com a expectativa de me correr tão bem”, confessou o campeão ao Swell-Algarve.
Miguel Martinho fez um campeonato brilhante e rompeu a tradição do cepticismo luso no momento da decisão. O velejador algarvio, 37 anos, assumiu o comando ao segundo dia de prova e não mais o largou, apesar da forte pressão do jovem francês Valentin Brault, de 23 anos. Com cinco dias de prova e várias regatas por dia, a luta foi intensa.
À entrada no penúltimo dia de prova, Miguel Martinho tinha apenas um ponto de vantagem sobre Valentin Brault e não houve regatas nesse dia, devido às condições instáveis do vento, o que levou a decisão para o último dia do campeonato. Nesse dia derradeiro foram apenas disputadas duas regatas, o que tornou a decisão ainda mais apertada. Miguel Martinho venceu uma e foi terceiro na outra, ampliando a vantagem para três pontos sobre o francês.
“Não ia com a expectativa de me correr tão bem. Foi excelente ter ficado em primeiro nos Masters e ter ganho a prova”, disse Miguel Martinho. A prova foi disputada no anteporto da Praia da Vitória, porque o mar estava muito agressivo. O vento esteve sempre instável, mas Miguel Martinho adaptou-se bem às condições e impôs-se a uma concorrência com “atletas de topo mundial no grupo dos quatro, cinco primeiros”.
Visivelmente feliz, Miguel Martinho admite que quer ir ao Mundial na Croácia, em Julho, “para ganhar”, mas o momento é ainda para festejar o seu primeiro título europeu na ‘categoria rainha’ do windsurfing. “Para já não quero pensar no Mundial, quero saborear esta vitória”, diz o velejador de Portimão.
Outros dois atletas do Clube Naval de Portimão estiveram presentes no Campeonato da Europa e conseguiram bons resultados. Vasco Chaveca foi 7º na classificação geral, 3º na categoria Masters. E João Pedro Santos terminou em 17º na geral, 3º na sub-divisão Grand Masters (maiores de 45 anos).

Miguel Martinho was crowned European Champion in Formula Windsurfing. The athlete representing ‘Clube Naval de Portimão’ won the championship held in Praia da Vitória, Terceira Island, Azores, between April 30 and May 5, sustaining the strong pressure of “world top athletes” and winning for the first time this european title. “I didn’t expected to run as well,” said the champion to Swell-Algarve.
Miguel Martinho made a brilliant championship and broke the portuguese tradition of skepticism in the moment of truth. The sailor from the Algarve, 37, took command on the second day of the championship and no more dropped, despite strong pressure from the young Frenchman Valentin Brault, 23 years. With five days of races and several regattas per day, the fighting was intense.
At the entrance on the penultimate day of the event, Miguel Martinho was just one point ahead of Valentin Brault and no regattas were raced on that day, due to the unstable wind conditions, leaving the decision for the final day of the championship. In this last day there were only two regattas, which made the decision even tighter. Miguel Martinho won one and was third in the other, extending the lead to three points over the French.
“I didn’t expected to run as well. It was great to have been first in Masters and won the event,” said Miguel Martinho. The competition was raced in the harbor of Praia da Vitória, because the sea was very aggressive. The wind was always unstable, but Miguel Martinho has adapted well to the conditions and imposed himself to the competition of “a group of four to five world top athletes.”
Visibly happy, Miguel Martinho admits he now wants to go to the World Cup in Croatia in July, “to win”, but the moment is still to celebrate his first European title. “For now I don’t want to think of the World Cup, I just want to savor this victory,” said the sailor from Portimão.
Two other athletes representing Clube Naval de Portimão attended the European Championship and achieved good results. Vasco Chaveca was 7th overall, 3rd in the Masters division. And João Pedro Santos finished 17th overall, 3rd in the sub-division Grand Masters (over 45 years).
