A algarvia Joana Schenker sagrou-se campeã Pro Tour 2013 ao vencer a última etapa (3ª) do circuito nacional de Bodyboard. A atleta da Associação de Bodyboard de Sagres (ABS) conquistou o título de campeã do circuito mas não é campeã nacional portuguesa devido à sua nacionalidade (alemã), sendo esse título atribuído a Catarina Sousa, segunda classificada na etapa – Bodyboard Azores Pro – disputada no fim-de-semana 23 e 24 de Novembro, na Praia de Santa Bárbara, Ribeira Grande, Ilha de São Miguel, Açores.
Joana venceu duas das três etapas do circuito e fez um quinto lugar na primeira etapa (Santa Cruz). A algarvia chegou aos Açores na vice-liderança do Pro Tour 2013 e era uma de quatro atletas em condição de vencer o circuito, juntamente com Catarina Sousa, Marta Fernandes e Teresa Almeida. A ausência de Marta Fernandes reduziu a luta a três atletas e a eliminação de Teresa Almeida nas meias-finais acabaria por deixar a decisão no duelo entre Joana e Catarina.
Esta terceira e última etapa feminina foi disputada por nove atletas em três rondas (quartos-de-final, meias-finais e final a quatro). Joana ‘varreu’ as suas duas baterias no caminho para a final adaptando-se bem às boas condições de mar, com ondas de 1 metro a 1,5 metros e vento fraco off-shore, sem vestígios da Tempestade Tropical Melissa, que acabou por passar ao largo da ilha.
A final a quatro acabou por ser uma luta intensa entre Joana e Catarina, com a liderança a mudar várias vezes até à buzina, altura em que a algarvia liderava com 11.65, contra os 11.50 da lisboeta. “Foi muito stressante para mim. Porque a Catarina é uma adversária de peso e eu já estive nesta situação muitas vezes e nunca consegui. Desta vez correu tudo bem”, disse Joana Schenker ao sair da água.
O Bodyboard Azores Pro foi também a última etapa do circuito masculino, concluído com um total de quatro etapas. A Associação de Bodyboard de Sagres participou na competição masculina com três atletas (Francisco Pinheiro, João Pinheiro e Gonçalo Pinheiro), nenhum deles no grupo de sete ‘riders’ que chegaram aos Açores com hipóteses matemáticas de conquistar o título nacional.
A etapa masculina foi disputada por 32 atletas em cinco rondas (R32; R16; quartos-de-final; meias-finais e final), sendo decidida por baterias ‘man on man’ desde os quartos-de-final. O ‘esperança’ ABS Gonçalo Pinheiro perdeu em terceiro logo na primeira ronda (R32). Francisco Pinheiro passou em segundo (em igualdade pontual com Gastão Entrudo) e João Pinheiro venceu a sua primeira bateria. Francisco em terceiro (a escassos 0.11 pontos da segunda posição de apuramento) e João em quarto foram eliminados na ronda seguinte (R16).
João Barciela, 26 anos de idade, venceu a etapa masculina e sagrou-se campeão nacional 2013. O atleta do Centro Recreativo e Cultural da Quinta dos Lombos (CRCQL), de Carcavelos, conquistou aos 26 anos o seu primeiro título de campeão nacional. As suas possibilidades matemáticas para vencer o circuito não eram as melhores, mas conseguiu o único resultado que lhe interessava – vencer a etapa – e beneficiou de várias conjugações de que precisava.
Ainda que Barciela tenha feito uma exibição notável ao longo de toda a etapa, a final masculina ficou marcada por alguma polémica, uma vez que Manuel Centeno já não podia ser campeão, mesmo que ganhasse a final, e fez uma interferência a três minutos do fim, que beneficiou o atleta de Carcavelos.

JOANA PRO TOUR CHAMPION
Joana Schenker from the Algarve won the Pro Tour 2013 champion title by winning the last sEvent (3rd) of the Portuguese National Bodyboard Circuit. The athlete representing the ‘Associação de Bodyboard de Sagres’ ( ABS ) won the circuit champion title but not the Portuguese national champion title because of her nationality (German), this title being awarded to Catarina Sousa, runner up in the Event – Bodyboard Azores Pro – held on the weekend 23th and 24th November at Santa Barbara Beach, Ribeira Grande, São Miguel Island, Azores.
Joana won two of the three events of the women circuit and finished fifth in the first event (Santa Cruz). The athlete from the Algarve arrived in Azores ranked second in the women Pro Tour 2013 standings and was one of four athletes in a position to win the circuit, along with Catarina Sousa, Marta Fernandes and Teresa Almeida. The absence of Marta Fernandes reduced the fight to three athletes and the elimination of Teresa Almeida in the semi-finals would eventually leave the decision to a duel between Joana and Catarina .
This third and final women event was disputed by nine ‘girls’ in three rounds (quarter-finals, semi -finals and final of four) . Joana ‘swept ‘ the two heats on her way to the final adapting well to the good sea conditions with waves of 1 meter to 1.5 meters and light wind off-shore, with no trace of Tropical Storm Melissa, which eventually passed off the island.
The final of four turned out to be a duel between Joana and Catarina, with the lead changing several times until the buzzer, when the athlete from the Algarve was leading with 11.65, slightly over the 11:50 score of Catarina. “It was very stressful for me because Catarina is a strong opponent and I’ve been in this situation many times and never got it. This time everything went well,” said Joana Schenker after leaving the water .
The Bodyboard Azores Pro was also the last Event of the men’s tour, which had a total of four events. The ‘Associação de Bodyboard de Sagres’ participated in the men’s competition with three athletes (Francisco Pinheiro , João Pinheiro and Gonçalo Pinheiro) , none of them in the group of seven ‘riders’ who arrived in Azores with mathematical chances of winning the Portuguese national title.
The man Event was disputed by 32 athletes in five rounds (R32, R16; quarter- final, semi-finals and final) being decided by ‘man on man’ heats from the quarter- finals forward. The young ABS Gonçalo Pinheiro lost in third in the first round (R32) . Francisco Pinheiro qualify in second (level on points with Gastão Entrudo) and João Pinheiro won his first heat. Francisco third (with a score 0.11 point short of the second place which would have qualified him for the next round) and João in fourth were eliminated in the second round (R16).
João Barciela, 26 years old, won the men’s event and was crowned Portuguese national champion 2013. It was the first time the athlete from Carcavelos (Lisbon) won the Portuguese national title. His mathematical chances to win the circuit were not the best, but it did the only result that mattered to him – winning the event – and benefited from various conjugations that he needed.
Although Barciela has made a remarkable display throughout the event, the men’s final was marked by some controversy, since Manuel Centeno could no longer be champion, even if he had won the final, and made an interference three minutes from the end which benefited Barciela.
